3. Ensure Interventions Are Supportive, Not Punitive

Even a biased identification system causes less harm if the interventions it triggers are genuinely supportive. When being flagged leads to mentoring, tutoring, or family engagement, over-identification is a resource allocation problem. Regular review of override patterns can reveal systematic problems with the system's predictions.

5. Monitor Outcomes Continuously

Equity auditing isn't a one-time exercise. Districts should continuously monitor both who gets flagged (process equity) and who gets helped (outcome equity) across demographic groups. Significant disparities should trigger investigation and adjustment.

This critique deserves serious engagement. Early warning systems are interventions within a broken system, not fixes for it. They can help individual students while leaving structural inequities intact. A school that invests heavily in identifying and supporting at-risk students but does nothing to address the community conditions creating that risk is treating symptoms while ignoring the disease.

At the same time, students are in school today, facing challenges today, and deserving support today. The choice isn't between fixing individual outcomes and addressing systemic issues—both are necessary. Early warning systems, implemented equitably, can be part of a comprehensive approach that also includes advocacy for policy change, community investment, and structural reform.

Early warning systems emerged from a genuine desire to help struggling students. The technology has improved dramatically, the research base has solidified, and the potential benefits are real. But potential benefits realized inequitably aren't really benefits at all—they're a reallocation of disadvantage.
