Student-Level Analysis

Identify which students mastered content and which didn't. Group students by performance level to inform differentiation. Identify students who need additional support.

Item Analysis

Look at specific questions: Which items did most students miss? What do wrong answers reveal about misconceptions? Are there patterns in how students are getting confused?

Root Cause Analysis

Go beyond "what" to "why." Why did students struggle with this standard? Possible causes include: prerequisite knowledge gaps, ineffective initial instruction, insufficient practice, or conceptual misconceptions. Understanding causes informs response.

Step 3: Plan

Prioritize

You can't fix everything at once. Prioritize the most critical gaps—standards that are prerequisites for upcoming content, standards where students are closest to proficiency, or standards with the most significant gaps.

Group Students

Based on analysis, group students by need: students who need reteaching of specific content, students who need additional practice, students who need enrichment, and students who need prerequisite skill building.

Design Response

What instructional changes will address identified gaps? Options include: whole-class reteaching if most students struggled, small-group instruction for specific needs, differentiated practice assignments, individual conferencing for struggling students, and modified upcoming instruction to build on what data revealed.

Schedule Time

Response requires time. When will reteaching occur? How will small groups be scheduled? Build response into the next instructional cycle.

Step 4: Act

Implement the Plan

Execute the instructional adjustments planned. Reteach the weak standards, provide differentiated practice, run small groups, conference with struggling students.

Monitor Progress

Don't wait until the next major assessment to know if response worked. Use formative assessment to check: Did reteaching help? Are students now mastering what they missed before?

Adjust as Needed

If initial response isn't working, adjust. Try different instructional approaches, provide more time, or intensify support for students still struggling.

Effective data-driven instruction often involves structured data meetings:
